The challenge
Websites that are business-critical rarely fail because of one dramatic event. They degrade: a plugin stops being maintained, an operating system reaches end of life, a certificate is renewed by whoever remembers, and a backup exists but has never been restored.
For a regulated sector such as insurance, that drift is not only an availability question. It is a security and continuity question, and it accumulates quietly until something forces attention.
The approach
I treated the estate as infrastructure with a lifecycle rather than as sites that occasionally need attention. That means knowing what is running, what is out of date, what depends on what, and which upgrades are due before they become urgent.
The priority order follows exposure rather than convenience: anything reachable from the internet and known to be vulnerable comes first, then supportability, then the improvements that are merely desirable.
What I delivered
Ongoing maintenance and production support across the AWS-hosted properties: plugin and platform lifecycle management, vulnerability review and remediation, certificate and DNS management, and a backup strategy that is verified rather than assumed.
Alongside the routine work, upgrade and migration planning for the underlying platform, so that operating-system and application lifecycle transitions were scheduled and rehearsed rather than triggered by an end-of-support date arriving unannounced.
Outcome
The properties moved from a maintained-when-noticed footing to a managed one, with known versions, a known upgrade path and a recovery position that has been tested.
Specific findings and configuration detail stay with the client. What is publishable is the shape of the work: reliability and security treated as an ongoing operational responsibility rather than a project with an end date.
